چکیده

Transient neonatal myasthenia gravis is a rare disease; it affects an estimated 15% of all babies born to myasthenic mothers. Since the condition was first described by Strickroot, Schaeffer, and Bergo (1942), reports have appeared in English of 42 patients, 4 of whom died in the neonatal period. Intestinal smooth muscle hypertrophy is extremely rare in infancy and childhood; to our knowledge only 2 cases have been recorded (Pritchard and Hillier, 1920; Guthrie, 1945). We present a further case of intestinal smooth muscle hypertrophy in an infant dying soon after delivery from a myasthenic mother who had been treated with large doses of neostigmine throughout pregnancy. A possible relationship between the two is considered.

A Model of the Respiratory System in the Newborn Infant

A dynamic mathematical model is presented which successfully simulates the respiratory control system of the newborn infant in different physiological conditions. The primary objective in constructing this model has been to provide a simulation aid in the investigation of maturation of the respiratory system, and the respiratory disorders during the newborn period, without the need for invasive...

Histomorphologic study of the renal artery in post-natal life of sheep (Ovis aries)

The purpose of this study was to gain more information on the structure of different layers of renal arteryand comparing these structures in post-natal male and female sheep. To do so, right and left renal arteries of6 adult and 6 newborn animals were dissected; the middle parts of arteries were only collected. After tissueprocessing using paraffin embedding method, 5–6-μm sections were cut and...

CF airway smooth muscle transcriptome reveals a role for PYK2.

Abnormal airway smooth muscle function can contribute to cystic fibrosis (CF) airway disease. We previously found that airway smooth muscle from newborn CF pigs had increased basal tone, an increased bronchodilator response, and abnormal calcium handling. Since CF pigs lack airway infection and inflammation at birth, these findings suggest intrinsic airway smooth muscle dysfunction in CF. In th...

Juvenile Myofibromatosis of Mandible- A Case Report

Myofibroma is a solitary benign tumor of myofibroblasts. Myofibromatosis describes multiple, simultaneous myofibromas at different sites in various organs. Myofibromatosis is a rare but well recognized entity which was originally thought to affect only neonates and infants. It is now apparent however that adults may also be affected. Solitary cases affecting the oral cavity appear to be rare. T...

Soluble guanylate cyclase-dependent relaxation is reduced in the adult rat bronchial smooth muscle.

Cyclic nucleotides are relaxants of the airway smooth muscle, yet most of the available data were obtained in adult animals. The expression and activity of cyclases have been reported to be developmentally regulated in the lung, and little is known about the age-related changes in their bronchial muscle relaxation potential. We evaluated and compared the newborn and adult rat bronchial smooth m...
